Letter to Dennis (8/29/99)

Ah geez. I just talked to Curt Kraemer earlier. He has disparaging comments about fly fishers for one, and I called him on it. He said things like the fly fisherman want to just hang out on the bank of a river and complain but do nothing about it. I said it was rather unfair to categorize them that way since fishing in general isn't done as a group to begin with, and that's never been the nature of enjoying the river, to do it in a group. Blasting them as a group because they can't act as a group was blatant discrimination. I emphasized that the fly fishermen I know DO care but that mobilizing many individuals who often prefer to be on the river alone is not easy, and therefore, it's impossible to characterize the syndrome as lack of concern.

He kept emphasizing that the groups that saved Reiter "rolled up their sleeves" and got to the job of saving Reiter, coming up with plans, money, threats, whatever, as of last July and therefore, saved the fishery. Otherwise, he said nobody seemed to even care about the N.F. He also cited last Fall's SRC run catch and release on the N.F. saying he only got a couple responses about how good that fishery was. He seemed to think that means no one cares, once again, so why should they do a catch and release on SRCs! I responded to that saying that people aren't often going to get home from a great day fishing catch and release for SRCs and want to pick up the phone right away and call Dept. of Fisheries and tell them what a great fishery they've created??!! I said that people respond to something being wrong, usually, not to something being right. Wheels that need oil, not wheels that don't.

He also said that he'd only received a few calls from fly fishermen in general, citing a few messages left on his machine and so on, dating from November of last year.

Then, I told him that for my two cents worth, now, on the phone, I'd say it's a shame that they call it management to allow the bait guys to catch and kill the big natives in the Stilly during the winter, and on top of it, dilute the genetics with winter plants. And then, to take away the summer run hatcheries is directly impacting the fly fishermen. He seemed to disagree with diluting the genetics and said that bait guys think the fly fisherman climb all over the redds during the time they fish, and the mortality rates are no different, and so on. He always seemed to be defending the bait guys, and crapping on the fly guys, arguing both sides of the fence when it suited his purpose.

Sorry about the long email. In the end I asked who I can contact in government to state my opinion, or in local groups. He gave me Gary Beezer's email and phone number. Ever heard of him? gbeezer@aol.com (425) 482-6657

By the way, that number on my desk I got from your web site a while back, and that's when I started calling. Good information can be dispersed that way. I can't believe you've received hate mail for that from fly fishers.
